Tracing its roots back to FMCs XM756 prototype, the YPR-765 was chosen by the Dutch Government over other AIFVs due to its cheaper cost as well as simpler and lighter construction. In total 2079 vehicles were ordered with 815 being made in the Netherlands under license from FMC. The vehicles entered service in 1975 and served as recently as the conflict in Afghanistan.
